[ARCHIVED] Cumberland County employees help stop hunger

Each month, employees of Cumberland County collect nonperishable items to distribute to a food pantry within Cumberland County.

“Our goal is to help the citizens of Cumberland County with the issue of food insecurity,” said Jeff Kimball, Cumberland County Probate Clerk and member of the Cumberland County Employee Advisory Council, who leads the monthly collection. “We are in our third year and looking forward to offering new ways for employees to continue to help.”

Using the list of food pantries provided by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Kimball ensures that each month a different food pantry receives the donations.

“If a town’s food pantry has closed or it doesn’t have one, I call the town to find out where residents go to ensure we’re giving to each municipality and the right place,” Kimball said. “Even if we only collect a few cans of food one month, it helps a person with a meal. There’s no pressure among departments to participate, but employees can easily help make a different in their community.”

Last year, Kimball says approximately 3,000 pounds of food were delivered County wide to food pantries. Deliveries are made through the Community Service Program at the Cumberland County Jail.

“It’s a win/win for the County and the inmates,” Kimball said. “Inmates are able to give back to their community, fostering pride in themselves, and the food pantries are always very grateful and happy to see the inmates helping, doing something positive for the communities.”
