Emergency Management Agency Seeks Submissions to Art Contest

EMA art contest

PORTLAND -- The Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency (CCEMA) is seeking submissions of artwork to serve as the cover of its regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The theme for this contest is hazard mitigation and disaster preparedness, as interpreted by the artist. CCEMA welcomes submissions of artwork as photographs, drawings, or other 2-D mediums.

Submissions can be realistic or abstract, and artists of any age are encouraged to enter. The purpose of the Five Year Hazard Mitigation Plan is to have each municipality review its priorities for mitigation (reducing the severity or seriousness of a hazard) and to look for ways the County can assist the communities.

Mitigation plans help to speed recovery and redevelopment efforts, to qualify for additional grant funding in both the pre and post disaster environment, and to comply with federal and state requirements for local hazard mitigation plans.

Cumberland County has not experienced as many severe disasters as other parts of the country, but the region does face the potential for natural disasters to occur. The Hazard Mitigation plan addresses these natural hazards such as flooding, wind storms, etc. Other hazards, such as technological hazards (chemical release), human-caused hazards (terrorism), or public health emergencies (pandemics) are addressed in other plans.

Art submissions will be accepted until Friday, April 9, 2021 at 8am. Submissions should be emailed to emaintern@cumberlandcounty.org. Please include the artist’s name, age (if under 18), mailing address, and a brief description of the submission in the email.

Winners will receive a preparedness prize pack by mail and recognition in the Hazard Mitigation Plan. For additional information regarding Hazard Mitigation, please visit the CCEMA’s website.
