CCSO Reconstructive Team

There are two Certified Accident Reconstructionists within the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, which are Sgt. David Hall and Deputy Andrew Hanna.

The Unit handled 16 reconstructions, 22 mappings, 1 consultation and responded to 2 others that ended up not being reconstructed. Completing a proper Reconstruction report can require a minimum of 20 hours to complete, with a possibility of as many as 40 or more hours in many cases.

Along with our reconstruction duties, we also have a Forensic Mapping Station. With this equipment we are able to produce a scaled diagram of a crash scene. The equipment also allows us to measure points of interest and store them in a data collector which enables us to then down load the points into a Map Scenes Program, which is contained our lap top computers. Once the points are downloaded we are able to produce a scaled diagram of the crash scene. A scaled diagram can require a minimum of 2 hours to complete, with a possibility of as many as 5 or more hours in some cases.

We covered these accidents in 13 different Towns involving 3 different Counties. A break down of the accidents follows:

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has also recently purchased a Crash Data Retrieval System which enables us to download information from most vehicles’ airbag module.  This provides pre-accident data which shows us that reconstruction techniques are, in fact, accurate.
