Master CO Program
Master Corrections Officer Qualifications
(Revised March 30, 2005)
Criteria: To qualify as a Master Corrections Officer the following minimum criteria must be met before an application can be made:

Full time certified Corrections Officer with three (3) years of continuous in-service employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Jail Division.
AND -
Obtain qualification in each of the following:

Master Control
-
Maximum Security
-
Officer in Charge
-
Accumulate a minimum of 150 hours of sick leave benefit time
-
Have not received a written reprimand or suspension in the twelve months prior to making an application
AND
-
Obtain additional certification or training in at least seven (7) of the following areas:

Field Training Officer/Designated Shift Trainer to meet Sheriff's Office standards.

Provide twenty (20) hours of classroom/shift training with favorable evaluation and instruct/train a minimum of four (4) hours annually with favorable evaluation.

Attendance at two specialized courses as defined by the Training Unit (Generally training sponsored by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or other special training courses designed to provide a specific skill level of training).

MCJA Instructor Certification in any topic.

Earned 30 or more college credit hours.
-
Deputy Sheriff Commissioned or complete the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Law Enforcement Pre-Service Training Program.

Classification Technician Qualification.
-
Transport Officer Qualified.
-
Intake Officer Qualified.
-
Education Technician.
-
Lobby Officer Qualified.
-
Active member of the Sheriff's Office Emergency Services Unit.

Pass the MCJA Fitness Assessment. (Must have completed and filed an MCJA report of medical examination PRIOR to the assessment.)

Accumulated 200 hours of sick leave benefit time.
-
State of Maine Certified substitute teacher.
-
Request the Training Unit supervisor to review and certify your application and qualifications.

Benefits for achieving this status are:
-
Stipend of fifty cents per hour.
-
One stripe to be worn on the uniform of the Corrections Officer. (Supervisors do not lose their status, but the stripe is superseded by their rank.)

An issued award bar in accordance with the Sheriff's Office Employee Recognition Policy.

Officer must maintain minimum standards to maintain status as Master Corrections Officer by:

Not receiving a written reprimand or suspension during the past twelve months.
-
Maintaining certification and training in the following:
Annually working at least one shift in all the areas of section two and those areas in section
three that were used for your initial qualification.

Maintaining a minimum of 150 hours of sick leave benefit time.
*Members failing to maintain this standard by using sick leave as result of long term illness, injury or family crisis may petition the Chief Deputy for review of their specific circumstances and determination as to their Master Corrections Officer status. The Chief Deputy is the final arbiter in this decision process. -
Officers must submit their recertification documents no later than one year from their certification anniversary date to the training Lieutenant. Failure to do so will automatically cause the individual decertification as a Master Corrections Officer.
