CCSO History

History of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office The office of Sheriff began in 1760, before Maine became a state and was still part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The first deputy to lose his life in the line of duty was Ebenezer Parker in January of 1808. The Sheriff is an elected position that is held for a four year term and is the highest elected law enforcement official in the county. The Sheriff is responsible for the County Jail and providing law enforcement to rural parts of the county. Even though the Sheriff's Deputies patrol 13 of the 24 towns 24 hours a day, most cities and towns have their own police departments and call on the Sheriff's deputies only if they need assistance. The Sheriff's Office works closely with other police departments throughout the county knowing crime and criminals have no borders.
