Correctional Medical Services, Inc. has been providing medical care to the inmates of the Cumberland County Jail since November 1, 2001. We provide medical, mental health and dental care to all inmates housed at the jail, and will send them to off-site specialists if necessary.
We have 24 hour nursing coverage in the medical unit, and have an employee roster of 30 full and part time members. The medical unit is an extremely busy ambulatory clinic, in which we provide physical examinations, non-urgent care, chronic disease care and emergency care. Medication technicians administer medications to inmates daily; the physician will see chronic disease patients; and the psychiatrist will see the extremely mentally ill patients.
The medical unit was initially accredited through the National Commission for Correctional Health Care in October, 2002. We were re-accredited in September of 2005, at which time we were commended for our organization and commitment to the care of the inmates, particularly for the sick call process in place. Through this Sick Call process, the RN sees 1000-1200 patients in sick call each month. If the medical problem cannot be resolved by the RN, the patient is then seen by the Nurse Practitioner or the Physician.
We also have a very active Mental Health Department, with two full time Mental Health Clinicians, a full time Substance Abuse Counselor, and a part time Psychiatrist available to provide crisis intervention and substance abuse counseling to a large percentage of the population.
The Correctional Medical Services Medical Unit at the Cumberland County Jail continues to strive for excellence within the correctional community – as we work in coordination with the Department of Public Health, public health clinics, homeless shelters, and private consultants to assure continuity of care for the patients who enter this facility.
