Criminal Investigation Division (CID)

The Criminal Investigation Division is comprised of 8 highly trained and experienced detectives. These detectives are responsible for conducting follow-up investigation of all felony cases, including but not limited to crimes of Gross Sexual Assault, Robbery, Burglary, and Aggravated Assault, Theft, and Death Investigations.

The unit is supervised by a Detective Sergeant and Detective Lieutenant, who perform case assignments, supervision, and management tasks. The Lieutenant also supervises the daily operations of the Civil Division. Both the Criminal Investigation Division and Civil Division is commanded by a Captain.

Incorporated within the Criminal Investigation Division are detectives who have focused areas of expertise. These personnel include an Evidence Technician, who specializes in collecting, preserving, and processing forensic evidence, a Polygraph Examiner who conducts criminal and pre-employment examinations, a Domestic Violence Investigator who is assigned to the District Attorney's Office, and a Drug Investigator assigned to Maine Drug Enforcement.

The Division also has a Crime Analyst, who performs all Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) tasks. The analyst also serves the agency by collecting and analyzing all investigative reports to assist with identifying crime trends and other activities. From this information, a weekly crime bulletin is prepared and disseminated within the organization, as well as to other surrounding law enforcement agencies.

In 2007, the detectives handled 867 cases, a 9% increase over 2006 totals. The Evidence Technician received 2,979 articles of evidence/property, an increase of 29% over 2006 totals.
