Cumberland County Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

The Law Enforcement Center, Community Corrections Center (formerly Pre-Release Center) and County Jail are located on County Way in Portland. County Way is directly behind the old Union Station on St. John Street. The Civil Division and Criminal Investigation Division are located in the Law Enforcement Center building. Our patrol sub-stations are located in the towns of Standish, Naples, Gray, No. Yarmouth and Harpswell.

Is this where I call to report a crime?

Only if the crime has been committed in one of the 14 communities we serve. (Baldwin, Casco, Frye Island, Gray, Harpswell, Harrison, Long Island, Naples, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal, Raymond, Sebago or Standish.) After determining where the crime occurred, you will then be referred to either our communications center or the appropriate municipal agency.

How do I get a copy of a police or accident report?

You may either mail your request, along with payment and a self addressed stamped envelope, or come in to our office at:

The Law Enforcement Center
36 County Way,
Portland, Maine. 04102-2755.

Where do I pick up an application?

Applications for Corrections Officer, Deputy Sheriff and civilian positions with the CCSO are available at the Law Enforcement Center, 36 County Way, Portland, Maine 04102-2755 or available by mail through Human Resources at 142 Federal Street, Suite 100, Portland, ME 04101.

What should I bring to jail when I am being booked in?

You should bring an ID with you as well as the order from the court if you have one. Everything else will be provided for you in the jail.

How do I bail someone out of jail?

You need to go to the jail lobby and see the information officer. Unless it's a property bail, you must bring cash to the jail when you bail someone. We do not accept credit cards, personal or cashiers checks, or money orders. Cash only (no matter what the amount).

How do I know if this person is in your jail?

When calling the jail (774-5939), just give the desk officer the name of the individual and they will run the name through the computer.

How do I send money to someone in jail?

We accept only money orders or bank/cashiers checks (no personal checks). The money order or cashiers check should be made payable to the inmate (individual’s actual, full name, not a nickname) AND do not forget to clearly print your name and return address, so we can return the funds to you if the individual is no longer at our facility.
Mail the check first class mail (no overnight or Federal Express) to:
[Inmate’s name]
Cumberland County Jail
50 County Way
Portland, ME 04102

If an inmate is no longer at the Cumberland County Jail, how do they get any money which might be on their account?

If possible, upon an individual’s leaving our facility they are given a check for the funds on their account. If the individual is being taken to a federal facility, they are not allowed to take the check with them, and our property officer will make arrangement with the individual to send his/her property and money to a family member or friend of the inmate’s choosing.

How do I get to the jail to visit someone?

If you are heading north on Interstate 295, take the Congress Street exit then turn right before the railroad tracks. If you are heading south on Interstate 295, take the second Congress Street exit (5A) then turn right before the railroad tracks.

I want to visit an inmate. What are your visiting hours?

Visiting hours depend on what POD the inmate is on. We have provided a complete list of all visiting hours. Click HERE for the Jail Visitation Schedule!

I had a commissary credit which hadn’t been posted to my account before I left the jail. How do I get my money?

If you expect a credit which isn’t on your account, we suggest that you provide the intake officer with your current address prior to your leaving the facility so the officer can enter the current information into our data system, because we will mail a credit check to the last known address for the individual. Or, we suggest that you call the business office and give us the address to mail the check. Checks can only be made payable to the inmate.

My son told me he was sending me money (from jail), but I haven’t gotten the check. Can I call the business office to request a check?

No. Other than orders from the Court, the inmate is the only one that can request that money be taken from his/her account. To request that a check be sent out, the inmate must fill out a check request form, which is available within the PODS, and the request is signed by a Captain to confirm that the inmate made the request.

Where do I pick up someone being released from jail?

You can pick them up in the lobby of the jail. Check in with the information officer and he/she will assist you.

Do I call the jail to revoke a bail?

No. You need to see the Clerk of the Court at the Cumberland County Court House to revoke a bail.
