The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) will bring the inaugural BlueDEF Tour’s (BDT) event to Portland’s Cross Insurance Arena for two nights of some of the best bull riders in the world battling the sport’s fiercest bovine athletes. The thrilling 8-second rides and heart-stopping wrecks make the PBR BlueDEF Tour one of the most exciting live sporting events to see, and it comes live to Portland on Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22.
The bull riding action begins at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, October 21 and 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 22. Volunteer cooks will have three opportunities in October to learn how to safely prepare food for large numbers of people.
University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County will present the Cooking for Crowds—Food Safety Training for Volunteer Cooks workshop from 9 a.m. to noon October 6, October 12 and October 25 at UMaine Regional Learning Center, 75 Clearwater Drive, Suite 104, Falmouth.
The workshop offers up-to-date information about safely preparing, handling, transporting, serving and storing food at soup kitchens, church suppers, food pantries and community fundraisers. Participants receive the manual Cooking for Crowds, a certificate of attendance, posters and an instant-read thermometer. The class meets the Good Shepherd Food Bank food safety training requirements.

Join the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, The Resilience Hub, and the Environmental Protection Agency to discuss farm management strategies for conserving soil and water, while increasing on farm productivity and profits. As we are experiencing prolonged dry periods followed by intense rain events, adoption of practices to maximize soil water retention, reduce runoff, and protect water systems will not only make our surrounding ecosystem healthier, but also result in increased crop yields and pasture health. This event will cover the importance of soil and water conservation focused agriculture in the Southern Maine region, in field practices for achieving these goals, and technical and financial assistance programs that are available to aid in adoption of these practices. This workshop will cover topics for farms of all scales.
